A former New South Wales MP and secret lover of Gladys Berejiklian will go on trial to fight allegations he forged documents while in office.

Daryl Maguire was charged in November 2022 with one count of conspiracy to commit a crime.

Maguire is alleged to have falsified documents between January 2013 and August 2015 when he was Wagga Wagga state MP.

He appeared in Sydney’s Downing Center Local Court on Tuesday via audio-visual link as his lawyer Jim Harrowell AM entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Documents tendered to the court claim Mr Maguire conspired with immigration agent Maggie Logan to “cause to be provided, for official Commonwealth purposes, documents relating to applications for visas allowing non-citizens to remain in Australia”.

The documents allegedly contained information that was “false or misleading in certain respects.”

It was also revealed at the inquest that Maguire had been in a five-year romantic relationship with then-New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian (the couple pictured far right).

The Australian Border Force alleges the pair carried out the fraud between January 2013 and August 2015, although Ms Logan is accused of continuing the fraudulent activity until 2017.

Maguire resigned from parliament on 3 August 2018.

Ms. Logan has not pleaded guilty. The 54-year-old woman faces 40 charges relating to her alleged involvement in providing official visa documents containing false statements over a four-year period.

Maguire was MP for Wagga Wagga from 1999 to 2018, when he resigned following an Independent Commission Against Corruption investigation into his conduct while in office.

The ICAC investigation heard allegations that he and Logan were involved in a cash-for-visa scheme involving payments worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The investigation also revealed that Maguire had been in a five-year romantic relationship with then-New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Ms Berejikian has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with any crime.

The ICAC found that Maguire had engaged in “serious corrupt conduct” in July 2023.

He issued a statement in the following days, saying he was “very proud of his many achievements in service to the electorate of Wagga and New South Wales” and argued for the “presumption of innocence”.

“Let us not forget that during his time representing the people of Wagga and the region he worked tirelessly for his constituents,” the two-page statement read.

“Indeed, he was described in evidence as a dog with a bone, a vociferous electorate advocate or a pain in the ass when it came to achieving improvements for the Wagga electorate.”

Maguire will face the District Court for the first time in April.
