Police were alerted to the incident at an apartment building in Berlin’s Altglienicke district around 1:00 p.m. on Monday.

A passerby reported hearing cries and moans coming from a cat box lying under a balcony and found the girl seriously injured inside, local media report.

Emergency responders took the 21-month-old baby to a nearby hospital, where X-rays showed her arms and legs were broken after the 36-foot fall.

While he remains in the intensive care unit, his condition is said to be no longer life-threatening.

Police launched an attempted murder investigation and arrested the girl’s mother, who was found in the third-floor apartment with another child.

The second child, apparently a boy, was taken in by the local youth welfare office.

It’s unclear if the mother locked her daughter in the cat box and threw her out the window. The whereabouts of her father are currently unknown.

The researchers did not publish any information about the mother’s age or her social background.

Berlin police spokesperson Anja Dierschke confirmed that the 3rd Homicide Squad has taken over the investigation of the case.

Prosecutors are expected to decide Tuesday whether the mother will have to appear before a judge.
