- Girl suffered serious head and face injuries and required surgery
- Police say the municipality will determine whether the pit bullcross will be stopped or put down
- The young girl was playing with the dog at the neighbors at the time
A seven-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after being brutally mauled by a dog at a neighbor’s house.
The child was visiting a neighbor in Devonport, northern Tasmania, at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday when she was suddenly attacked by the pit bull who lived there.
She suffered injuries to her face, neck, head and jaw and was taken by ambulance to Launceston General Hospital, where she was operated on Thursday morning.
When police arrived at the property after the attack, the dog had already been removed from the home and the owner refused to tell officers where the pet was.

Tasmania Police Inspector Steve Jones said the girl will likely need more surgeries and will have stitches in her face and head.
He said her family was “devastated” in the wake of the shocking attack.
“Apparently the scene was pretty horrific and there was a lot of blood, so it was clear her mother wanted to get to her as soon as possible,” he said.
The dog’s owner has since spoken to the municipality and will meet with authorities on Thursday afternoon to determine whether the dog should be taken to a shelter or euthanized.
Inspector Jones said the seven-year-old was playing with the dog and other children her age at the time of the attack.
The dog’s owner was forced to pull the little girl’s pit bull.
The police will investigate the incident to determine whether there are violations under the Dog Management Act.
