A thirteen-year-old girl who was sexually abused by her father for four years died during the birth of his child, police in Brazil said.
Schoolgirl Luana Ketlen died on December 11 after being admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain before doctors discovered she was pregnant.
Doctors decided to induce childbirth and deliver a baby boy – who survived – before taking the girl to a specialized healthcare department. She died en route.
The police then issued a warrant for the 36-year-old father Tome Faba and said they believed he started abusing his daughter when she was nine years old.
Luana Ketlen, 13, died after being rushed to hospital on December 11 with a severe stomachache, before horrible doctors discovered she was pregnant
Father Tome Faba, 36, fled but was arrested a week later and charged with abusing the girl from the age of nine
Faba fled before she was caught in the city of Coari a week later.
He first appeared in court on December 27, accused of child abuse and manslaughter.
Faba’s family, who live on the outskirts of Coari, say they had no idea of the abuse.
The light-built teenager was seven months pregnant when she was brought to Coari Regional Hospital with severe pain.
Doctors diagnosed her with acute anemia and decided to cause labor.
She gave birth to a premature baby boy who survived miraculously.
But after the birth, the girl’s health deteriorated and the test results showed that she suffered from multiple complications, including cirrhosis of the liver, water in the lungs, and low blood pressure.
Luana died while being flown to a specialized hospital in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, about 225 miles away (363 km).
During a press conference, José Barradas, Police Commissioner from Coari, said: “The teenager lived with her parents in a rural area outside the city.
“She only realized two months ago when she began to feel pain in her stomach that she was five months pregnant.
“Luana claimed that she was ordered to go fishing with her father and was allegedly raped by him while she was there.”
Doctors decided to induce childbirth and Luana (left in the hospital and right) gave birth to a healthy baby boy – but died tragically while being admitted for specialist treatment
Police say Faba attacked the girl during frequent fishing trips and threatened to kill her if she didn’t keep the abuse secret
A relative who did not want to be identified described the teenager as innocent and immature and said she was so traumatized by the abuse she kept secret.
Only when her body started to change and family members became suspicious that she could be pregnant did they discover the truth.
Luana was persuaded by an aunt to reveal who the perpetrator was. But when the girl’s mother heard the news, she refused to believe that her husband was the father of his daughter’s child.
Chief Barradas claimed that Faba threatened to kill his daughter if she reported what was going on.
Barradas said: ‘Family members tried to intervene and protect the child by warning social services.
“They reported the abuse to the police and issued an order for Tomé’s arrest, but before it could be executed, Luana’s health deteriorated and died shortly after the birth.”
The incident caused indignation in the community with many Protestants out of court during the appearance of the suspect.
Social services still have to determine whether family members will have custody of the newborn boy.
Meanwhile, the police revealed the premature “baby boy and doing exceptionally well” and thrives in the hospital’s neo-birth unit after his traumatic birth.
According to doctors, he is “strong and already breathing without a fan.”
