Gio Reyna insisted his family feud with USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter “isn’t even an issue anymore” after lighting up their 3-1 win over Jamaica on Thursday night.
The Nottingham Forest loanee was at the center of a row between Berhalter and his parents in the aftermath of the 2022 World Cup.
Reyna, son of former U.S. captain Claudio Reyna and midfielder Danielle Egan, was limited to two substitute appearances during the tournament in Qatar.
Berhalter said in a post-tournament news conference that he nearly sent a player home for lack of effort during practice, clear remarks about Reyna.
Reyna’s parents contacted the U.S. Soccer Federation about a three-decade-old domestic violence allegation involving Berhalter and the woman who later became his wife.
Gio Reyna insisted his feud with USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter ‘is no longer an issue’
Reyna’s parents contacted the U.S. Soccer Federation about a three-decade-old domestic violence allegation involving Berhalter and the woman who later became his wife.
Berhalter was replaced by two interim coaches and, after a law firm retained by the USSF determined that he did not improperly withhold information when he was hired in 2018, he was rehired in June to resume training in September.
Reyna returned to the USMNT team in October 2023 and is expected to be part of the squad for this summer’s Copa America.
Reyna came off the bench and assisted on both of Haji Wright’s overtime goals
He came off the bench to help turn the tide against Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals on Thursday, assisting both of Haji Wright’s goals in overtime.
Speaking about his relationship with Berhalter after the match, the Dortmund player said: “Obviously what happened happened, but I think we’re both so overwhelmed and so focused on the group that, yeah, It’s not even a problem right now. Not anymore. We’re so far from it.
The USMNT escaped defeat at Texas with an own goal in the sixth minute of second-half injury time before Wright scored twice in overtime.
Greg Leigh scored 30 seconds in for the 57th-ranked Reggae Boyz, and the No. 13 Americans were on the verge of losing their third straight game.
Instead, Wright scored in the sixth and 19th minutes of overtime and the United States will try to win the Nations League for the third straight time on Sunday.
Both of Wright’s goals were scored by Reyna, who came on early in the second half having been limited to 42 minutes in four substitute appearances for Forest since he was loaned by Dortmund on January 31.
“When we scored in the last minute, I knew we had the depth in the legs and the energy for the last 30 minutes to score a few more goals,” Reyna said.
