Giant dinosaur skeleton unearthed in China: 26ft Jurassic monster nearly 70% intact is discovered in ‘rare’ find 180 million years old

  • The fossil, found in southwestern China’s Lufeng, is about 70 percent complete
  • Called a ‘national treasure’ by the head of the city’s dinosaur conservation center
  • Fossil believed to date back to the Jurassic period and was discovered in late May

Chinese paleontologists have discovered an extraordinarily complete dinosaur skeleton from the Jurassic.

The fossil, found in southwestern China’s Lufeng, is about 70 percent intact and belongs to a dinosaur believed to have been nearly eight meters long.

It was discovered during an excavation in late May in soil that is about 180 million years old, from the Jurassic period.

Head of the Dinosaur Fossil Conservation and Research Center at Lufeng City Wang Tao said: “Such a very complete dinosaur fossil is a rare find around the world.”

He described the fossil as a “national treasure” and said his team now hoped to excavate the dinosaur’s skull.

“Based on the fossil discovered over the years, on its tail and femurs, we think this is some kind of giant Lufengosaurus, which lived during the early Jurassic period,” he added.

The center is planning an emergency excavation to save the skeleton, as it was found in a site at risk of soil erosion.

This species made international headlines in 2017, when collagen protein was discovered preserved in the rib of a Lufengosaurus fossil.

The protein was 100 million years older than all previously discovered proteins, BBC reported at the time.

Scientists have also found traces of a mineral that they believe may have been in the animal’s blood.

Lufengosaurs are thought to have been four-legged herbivores and were popularly referred to as “Lufeng Lizards.”

Earlier in 2021, the skeleton of a young dinosaur from the same period was discovered in Lufeng.

The fossil was another exciting find by paleontologists in the region, as it doesn’t match any other known dinosaur species.
