A former soccer star has to have his testicle removed after it ruptured in a crash during a bad dive while training for a reality TV show.

Former German Bundesliga midfielder Thorsten Legat said his testicle had swelled almost to the ‘size of a balloon’ after the accident.

The 53-year-old had jumped from a three-meter high plank on his second day of training for the TV program ‘RTL Turmsprung’ (High diving) in Cologne.

He later said, “I jumped off and forgot to keep my legs together. There was a huge bang when I hit the water, I felt pain.’

At first he thought nothing of it and even practiced a number of jumps.

But on his way home, he realized that something was very wrong.

He said, “I thought I was growing a third ball,” adding that his testicles were “almost the size of a balloon.”

A urological examination revealed a testicular tear, a hematoma and a bladder infection.

A doctor then pronounced the painful verdict – the injured testicle should be removed.

Legat said, “At first I thought the world was coming at me.”

But the father of two is now at peace with his upcoming surgery, which will take place in mid-August.

He even joked, “I’m getting an implant there. I’m trained, it’s like a breast implant.’

Doctors have assured him that his other testicle will be left in good condition should he decide to have more children.

Legat amassed 243 games and 15 goals during his 15-year senior career, all of which he spent in the Bundesliga.

He played for VfL Bochum, Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart and Schalke 04 and made his last professional appearance with the latter in 2001.

He has a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup title, a Bundesliga title and three DFB-Pokal titles.

During his time as an active player, his career was overshadowed by several run-ins with the law.

He once hospitalized a man who allegedly threatened him.

And on another occasion, he was being treated for attempted dangerous bodily harm after he drew a samurai sword on a group of youths in a communal fast-food parking lot.

He remains active on Instagram, where he has 44,700 followers.

And he will make up for his forced retirement from ‘RTL Turmsprung’ by participating in a celebrity edition of ‘Ninja Warrior Germany’, with profits going to charity.
