The freestyle wrestlers Annika Wendle and Sandra Paruszewski made it into the small final on the third day of the European Championships in Zagreb. Wendle achieved bronze in the class up to 55 kg, as did Paruszewski in the class up to 59 kg. The medals are awarded on Thursday.
Wendle started the tournament with two shoulder victories at the beginning of the women’s competitions before losing to Erika Bognar from Hungary in the semifinals. France’s Tatiana Debien will be the opponent in the battle for precious metals.
Paruszewski, who had already won bronze at the European Championships last year, lost to Julija Tkach in the quarterfinals. However, since the Ukrainian made it through to the final and there are only a small number of participants, Paruszewski is going for bronze against Aljona Kolesnik (Azerbaijan) on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Niklas Stechele (up to 61 kg) finished the men’s freestyle competitions. After a 0:11 defeat the day before against world champion Zelimkhan Abakarov (Albania), the Westendorfer continued in the repechage round against Taras Markowitsch, but there he clearly lost to the Ukrainian and was eliminated.
