Brussels, in particular, calls on Georgian officials to reform the judiciary, the electoral system, freedom of the press, and to confront the oligarchy.
The Georgian Foreign Minister confirmed on Friday that his government is doing everything in its power to get Georgia the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union, while his French counterpart called on this country in the Caucasus to implement “courageous reforms.”
“We still have steps to take. We are all very motivated. We all aim to fulfill the commitments” of the European Union, promising to move “further and faster,” said Ilya Darsiashvili, during a joint press conference with Catherine Colonna after their meeting in Tbilisi.
For her part, she urged the French minister to seize this “historic opportunity” by taking “decisive steps regarding the 12 recommendations” of Brussels.
In June 2022, the European Union refused to grant Georgia the status of a candidate for accession, unlike what it had done with regard to Ukraine and Moldova.
Brussels, in particular, calls on Georgian officials to reform the judiciary, the electoral system, freedom of the press, and to confront the oligarchy.
“Courageous reforms are required to ensure the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, protect institutions from the influence of private interests, and guarantee media freedom and pluralism,” Colonna added.
The Georgian minister confirmed that “a large part of the recommendations” have begun to be implemented with the application of more than eighty legal texts in this regard.
But Colonna said more needed to be done.
On the other hand, she praised the fact that opinion polls showed that 85 percent of Georgians support the European Union.
