George Russell wants fan abuse of F1 drivers to be ‘stamped out’

George Russell calls for fans’ abuse of F1 drivers to be ‘wiped out’ just days after Lando Norris revealed he regularly receives death threats… as the Mercedes star claims he finds it hard to hear people boo

  • Russell believes fan abuse towards drivers should be ‘wiped out’

George Russell has called for more to do to fight abuse by fans of Formula 1 drivers after admitting he felt angry at being booed by a certain supporter during the Canadian Grand Prix last month.

Fellow Briton Lando Norris recently revealed that he regularly receives death threats on social media, while claiming that his girlfriend Luisinha Oliveira has also been targeted by online trolls.

Russell has now stated that he was booed before even racing in Canada, leaving him surprised by the behavior of some of the sport’s supporters.

“I think as your profile rises, there’s bound to be a lot of positives to it,” Russell told reporters.

‘But there are also disadvantages that require some adjustment. In Montreal, someone had my name shouted and booed.

“And I’m just sitting in the car on the drivers’ parade. And it’s kind of strange to understand that this 35-40 year old guy is jeering at me when I don’t even know him.

“I just try to keep myself to myself and try to give my best every race I go and put on a good show and be polite and nice to everyone.

‘So there are some things that you have to get used to, and just accept that unfortunately this is the world and society we currently live in. And this is another example of something that needs to be eradicated.”

Boos have become commonplace in a number of sports, but Russell isn’t sure why that’s the case and wonders if athletes should be expected to put up with it.

“What gives that guy the right to scold someone? What gives these football fans the right to insult the players?

“They’re just doing their job, doing their best to make a career. And I think that’s what a lot of people don’t really appreciate in this position,” he added.

Formula 1 has arrived at Silverstone this weekend and Russell hopes to have the home fans behind him for Sunday’s race as he looks to continue his consistent start to the season, finishing in the top five in every race to date.
