George Clooney reveals that he cast Christopher Abbott in Catch-22 after watching HBO & # 39; s Girls

George Clooney adjusts Joseph Heller's satirical novel Catch-22 from 1961 for a six-part TV show, in which he pays more attention to female roles.

According to The Times, the story from the 20th century has been criticized because of & # 39; terrible female hatred & # 39; and the demonstrably humiliating depiction of women – the few female characters are & # 39; objective and sexualized & # 39 ;.

The 57-year-old will produce, star and direct the show and he and co-star Christopher Abbott, 33, grace the cover of Variety to promote the new project.

Catch-22 tells the story of Captain John Yossarian, (Abbott), an American bombardier stationed on an island in the Mediterranean during the Second World War, who fights to stay alive.

George said he only joined the project because the script was the & # 39; sexist representation of women & # 39; from the original story.

He said to Variety: & # 39; We tried to be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem, & # 39; described the image of women, & # 39; terrible & # 39 ;.

Catch-22 contains a female prostitute who & # 39; Nately & # 39; s w *** e & # 39; and her sister, 12, who is the & # 39; nately & # 39; s kid sister & # 39; van Nately.

George has the character Nurse Duckett, played by Tessa Ferrer, & # 39; a more complex and emotionally interesting part & # 39; given.

Meanwhile, Abbott is best known for his supporting role of Charlie Dattolo in HBO's hit Lena Dunham show Girls and George admitted it was Abbott's role in Girls that helped him to score his role.

& # 39; That's how [Christopher Abbott] The part I got was because I kind of looked religious at girls, & Clooney revealed in the interview.

He continued: & # 39; I actually went back to a few episodes of Chris on Girls and listen, it's not quite my cup of tea as a show, but that's probably because I'm a 57-year-old man. & # 39;

The actor had been filming Catch-22 in Italy for almost half a year to get the classic novel back on screen.

The Times reports that he and his co-producer Grant Heslov have hired women for senior off-screen positions.

The show will deviate somewhat from the novel and is told from the point of view of main character Yossarian, who is played by Abbott.

Former ER star, George makes his return to television in the series as the character Scheisskopf.

The mini series is mainly about a & # 39; set of boys & # 39; and also about stars like Hugh Laurie and Kyle Chandler.

Clooney admitted that women on a & # 39; terrible & # 39; were portrayed in the novel and the producers worked hard to remedy that while remaining authentic at work.

Catch-22 is made by an American-British-Italian trio of networks.

Hulu will broadcast the series in the United States, Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and Sky Italia in Italy. It is planned to premiere in 2019.

Luke Davies, who co-authored the script, said: & # 39; We made it our mission to make the portrayal of women more interesting, not because we think the world has changed, not because we think external forces tell us that we need to do that, but because portraying women is so damn horrible. & # 39;
