Simona Belcheva's daughter, Alayla Janjua, was just one year and one day old when she hit her face with a hot cup of coffee.

A mother has recalled the horrifying moment she heard her one-year-old baby scream after a cup of scalding coffee burned her.

Simona Belcheva’s daughter, Alayla Janjua, was just one year and one day old when she hit her face with a hot cup of coffee.

After hearing her daughter’s screams, Simona, 23, and her partner Daniel, 22, rushed her to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in Bedfordshire, where they were told she had scald burns of mixed depth of 7%. in the body.

Eight months after the accident and with Alayla recovering, Simona has recalled how she and Daniel watched their daughter in agony as she was wrapped in bandages in a burns unit in Chelmsford.

The mother said: ‘Somehow he managed to knock over the coffee and it fell on his face. At the hospital they put a bandage on him to cover all his burns.

“We were celebrating her birthday and then she looked like a Teletubby; it was shocking to see her like that.”

Simona added that the “worst feeling” was not being able to help Alayla while doctors changed her bandages every three days.

She said: ‘She would be screaming when they did that. It was the worst feeling: she couldn’t help her.

“At one point it swelled so much that I couldn’t open my eyes.”

Simona also said Alayla was “always smiling” despite everything, but the mother has had issues with strangers calling her a “bad mother” and claiming she “burned her out.”

She said: “People have said I’m a bad mother, I don’t let that get to me.”

Sue Boasman, a specialist nurse at St Andrew’s Burns Service, was among those who cared for Alayla.

She shared some tips for parents to treat burns and keep their children safe, saying: ‘If your child suffers a burn, immediately place the affected area under cold running water for at least 20 minutes.

‘Then cover the area with cling film, if possible, and seek help if necessary. Avoid using ice or very cold water, as it can make the burn deeper and leave the patient very cold.
