A Gen Z employee has gone viral after creating a funny video for his out-of-office message.
Joshua Kessel, who works for Sydney-based startup Butter Insurance, clearly decided that a simple email wouldn’t cut it.
Office workers around the world look forward to the satisfaction of turning on OOO before a well-deserved vacation, but since Josh works in marketing, he decided to take things a step further.
In a viral video that now has over eight million views on TikTok and Instagram, Josh put his creative skills to work.
Butter Insurance’s Instagram account said: ‘Our Gen Z marketer set this to out of office.’
They added: “I wish this was a joke, but he’s not even here to make a video.”

In a viral video that now has over eight million views on TikTok and Instagram, Josh put his creative skills to work.
In a very simple email that didn’t provide any information, Josh wrote: “Hi, please see attached video.”
The clip quickly addressed the topic, starting with an image of a plane and the caption: “I’m out of the office.”
Speaking to the camera, Josh said: “If you’re watching this, I’m probably on a plane to Europe right now,” before a 3D-edited plane zoomed past.
He continued: “Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions. First: When will I be back?”
After a long pause, Josh quickly moved on to the second question.
He said, ‘Two, if you’re a recruiter, my personal email is…’
Her employer then muted her email address and wrote: “Are you kidding me?”
Josh said, ‘Three, for any urgent queries, please email me and I’ll look into it when I get back.’
“We’ll be back soon,” he wrote to conclude the video.
Social media users were quick to draw comparisons between him and The Office’s Michael Scott or How I Met Your Mother’s Barney Stinson.
Most agreed that the video was hilarious, but some thought it had a more millennial-like feel.
Most agreed that the video was hilarious, but some thought it had a more millennial feel to it.
They wrote: ‘That’s not Gen Z style. It screams millennial’;
“Gen Z doesn’t bother to educate themselves in the first place. They just disappear lol”;
‘Girl, this is a millennial trying to be Gen Z… we would never do that…! (But it’s still cool!)
‘The “we’ll be right back” at the end made me die, lol’;
“He has too much free time to do that.”
Others hoped to recreate the video themselves, but worried it would cause problems at work: “I love it! Now I’m wondering if this will get me fired.”
“But how do I get the courage? I love this.”
One person was so impressed with Josh’s skills that they even wrote: ‘Well my FAQ is is he single? And I didn’t get an answer so…’
Previously, other Gen Z employees have shared their funny (and brutal) out-of-office messages.
