Britain’s Caden Cunningham and Rebecca McGowan have reached the taekwondo quarter-finals in their Olympic debuts.
Cunningham, hailed as the future of the sport by Britain’s two-time bronze medallist Bianca Walkden, beat Nigeria’s Abdoul Issoufou 2-0 in the men’s +80kg category in Paris.
McGowan then made short work of Fiji’s Venice Traill 2-0 in the women’s +67kg category.
Cunningham will face Cuban Rafael Alba from 13:40 BST before McGowan takes on Svetlana Osipova of Uzbekistan at 14:45.
Britain has won a taekwondo medal at every Olympics since Athens 2004 but has struggled in Paris.
Favourite Bradly Sinden was forced to retire injured ahead of his bronze medal match in the men’s -68kg category, while two-time gold medallist Jade Jones suffered another early defeat in the women’s -57kg category.
