Gavin and Stacey fans were treated to a host of returning characters as the popular show came to a satisfying conclusion on Wednesday night.

But some wondered why Barry Island’s chancellor Dick Powell was left out of the Christmas Day finale after wrongly assuming he was Gwynn’s mysterious lover.

Actor Gwynfor Roberts endeared himself to fans after playing the popular black market trader, the show’s only native Welsh speaker, for several episodes.

However, he was notably absent in its long-awaited finale, despite the return of all the other characters.

As for X, a handful of its 12.5 million Christmas Day viewers admitted they were disappointed not to see it after thinking Powell might be Gwen’s new boyfriend until it was finally revealed to be Dave Coaches.

‘Gwen and Dave, coaches! I’m not going to recover from that surprise. I thought it might have been mystery man Dick Powell, but how wrong can you be? wrote one.

A second added: “I don’t know why but it never came to mind. I thought of Pete, Dick Powell and Owain Hughes before I thought of Dave Coaches,” one wrote.

While a third commented: “I thought it was going to be Dick Powell, the only one who speaks Welsh.”

The show’s co-creator and actress, Ruth Jones, had previously confirmed that Roberts would not appear during a press conference with her castmates in December.

“I think in the original script we had Dick Powell,” he explained. “There was just no place for him, God bless him.”

The final episode of Gavin and Stacey captivated viewers as characters Smithy and Nessa finally got their happy ending, five years after the Christmas proposal cliffhanger.

The festive special began in both Billericay and Barry as the family of Stacey Shipman and her husband Gavin prepared for a wedding, presumed to be between Neil “Smithy” Smith and Vanessa “Nessa” Jenkins.

However, it turned out that the wedding was between Smithy and Sonia, his girlfriend from the 2019 Christmas Day episode, played by Laura Aikman.

Gavin and Stacey: The Finale attracted a whopping 12.5 million viewers to become the most watched show on Christmas Day.
