Gavin Newsom has been criticized online for posting a turkey from a Thanksgiving video amid concerns the wealthy governor is out of touch with his state’s problems.
The California governor, 57, and his wife Jennifer moved their family into a $9.1 million mansion in Kentfield, Marin County earlier this week, while also purchasing the $3.7 million mansion in Fair Oaks that he is currently in lives, kept.
The Democrat is poised to make this exorbitant purchase given the crippling inflation and cost-of-living crisis his constituents have endured in recent years during his time in office.
But the husband and wife duo tried to play it modest in a holiday post on social media.
“Thanksgiving is about gratitude, it’s about appreciating what you have and who you are with,” Jennifer began.
The governor then expressed his gratitude for his children and extended family before attempting to thank his constituents.
Viewers echoed variations on the same sentiments as soon as it was posted online, with many not reacting well to the messages from Newsom’s new ivory tower.
One person wrote: ‘Happy Thanksgiving! What’s the weather like there in the $9 million mansion? Will you be offering guided tours?
Gavin Newsom was criticized online for posting a turkey from a Thanksgiving video, as Californians continue to accuse the wealthy governor of being out of touch with the state’s problems
Earlier this week, Newsom, 57, and his wife Jennifer moved their family into a $9.1 million mansion in Kentfield, Marin County, while also renovating the $3.7 million mansion in Fair Oaks where he is currently lives, kept.
“While destroying the finances of the state of California,” wrote another. “How’s your $9.1 million mansion slum doing? Where does the $ come from? You have no business or accounting sensitivities, so was it the cartels? The Gettys? Money laundering from the $24 billion in missing homeless funds?”
Recently, the lawmaker’s bad optics were in the spotlight when critics launched into X with images of Newsom casually sipping a latte as he strolled past homeless people on Skid Row while being bombarded with questions from protesters.
“I celebrate Thanksgiving with 16 other family members who escaped from California over the past five years. We all moved to the Red States. From South Carolina, to Tennessee and Florida. None of us miss your tyrannical state,” another social media user added.
Recent years have been littered with stories of tech moguls and wealthy millennials trying to leave the Golden State.
Others saw the video for the First Family of California’s transparent fakeness: “There is nothing real about this pre-recorded video. I wish for some authenticity from politicians for once.’
Many have wondered how the Newsom family can afford this largesse on the governor’s reported $200,000 salary, as this week’s closing on his new home was the fifth most expensive home sold in the Marin County region in the past 25 years has been purchased.
The governor amassed a multi-million dollar fortune from various businesses and investments early in his career.
Yet the median home price in the county is $1.76 million, with Newsom criticized for moving to such an exclusive area as homelessness in California skyrocketed while he was governor.
Sacramento Bee opinion writer Robin Epley led the charge this week when she asked in an op-ed how Newsom “could be so mind-numbingly obtuse to the lives led by the average Californian?”

Many felt the luxury mansion purchase was particularly ill-timed, as Epley condemned him in her op-ed this week for leaving Californians with a “bad taste in their mouths” after he “struggled to spend a Thanksgiving this year -to put dinner on the table’.
“Many Californians are having difficulty purchasing groceries and gas. Many are behind on their utility bills and in crushing debt,” she wrote.
“How can anyone in this state, much less this country, look at a man living so extravagantly lavishly? How can Newsom rant about Big Oil when he’s now a super commuter?
“How can he push for austerity in the state budget when he’s spending millions on a house with a pool, spa, garden statues and 5,000 square feet?”
Epley added that the presidential election should have been enough to make Newsom think twice as his Democratic Party suffered heavy defeats fueled by the perception that they are the party of out-of-touch elitists.
Others said the mansion is adding to the damage following Newsom’s questionable behavior during his time in office during the pandemic, including strictly enforcing mask mandates before being caught partying without a mask several times.
He also came under heavy scrutiny for his decision to close public schools to protect against the spread of Covid-19, but continued to allow private schoolchildren like his to continue attending exclusive schools.
Newsom’s children were ostensibly the reason for his valuable move to the state this month, as he will reportedly be moving to Marin County because his eldest child Montana just started high school there.

Montana enrolled at the Branson School, where tuition is more than $60,000 per year.
The deal for the new 5,600-square-foot mansion closed Thursday, with Newsom paying 7 percent more than the asking price for the mansion that sits on less than an acre of land.
The six-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom property, complete with a guesthouse for visitors, features floor-to-ceiling windows with views of Mount Tamalpais.
Outside, there’s a pool and spa with sculptures lining a backyard with a roaring fire pit. Inside, the bedrooms have a handful of walk-in closets.
A spokesperson for Newsom would not confirm the purchase of the property, but stated, “The family continues to divide their time between Sacramento and Marin counties.
“The family’s children are moving on to middle school, also high school. “The governor and the first partner want to create continuity in education for their children, recognizing that the governor’s term ends in January 2027.”
