Gavin and Stacey’s Mathew Horne shared an adorable moment with fans when he took time off from filming to share his birthday cake on Friday morning.

Mathew, 46, who plays Gavin in the hit BBC comedy, appeared on set for the first time on Thursday, reuniting with James Corden following their row.

The actor ran towards fans with his giant birthday cake, which he almost dropped after tripping, and asked: ‘Does anyone have any cutlery?’

Mathew was completely blown away by the fans who supported his character ‘Gavalar’ during filming at Barry Island.

As she walked up the hill she ate chocolate from her cake and fans sang “Happy Birthday” to her.

Another fan shouted: ‘GAV-A-LAR!’

Laughing and bowing, he joked, “Thanks! Does anyone have any silverware? No? We should go into one of these houses and buy some knives and stuff.”

“I want you to take that (the cake) and share it,” she told her fans.

Fans who took the time out of their day were treated to Mathew clapping, “Thank you all, you’re amazing,” before rushing back to set.

Known as ‘Gavalar’ and ‘Smithster’, there didn’t seem to be any tension between James and Mathew on set, despite their long-standing feud.

James and Mathew continued to work together as comedy partners on projects including the critically panned film Lesbian Vampire Killers after Gavin And Stacey ended.

Hoping to make it as a television duo, they also hosted the comedy show Horne and Corden in 2009, although this also received poor reviews from critics.

As their career together failed to take off, the couple stopped working together and began to grow apart with rumors of a feud swirling around the two.

The Fantastic Four, including Mathew (second from right), were last seen in the 2019 Christmas special where Nessa proposed to Smithy and the episode ended before he responded.

While James found success on the West End stage in One Man, Two Guvnors, and then headed to America to begin presenting the Late Late Show in 2015, Mathew remained in the UK working on television projects.

Speculation about the pair’s friendship continued to grow as many fans feared they had grown apart.

During an appearance on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2011, James opened up about their relationship and admitted that they had grown apart but there was never a major fight.

When James was asked if he kept in touch with Mat, he replied: “Eh, we talk from time to time, yeah.”

Piers revealed that Mat was asked to take part in the show but decided against it. James continued hesitantly: “I didn’t know, but I can understand.”

Expressing regret at how quickly they became embroiled in everything that happened after Gavin and Stacey, she confirmed: “We never fell out, it was never that. We were one person for a long time. If I have one regret, it’s that we just rushed into those things.”

“We did our own sketch show, but the reaction was fierce. It was hard to get over it. We were riding an incredible wave and then it just came crashing down. In one year we spent 263 days together and we went from that to nothing.”

Riding the Los Angeles wave, James hosted the Late Late Show until 2023, while making a name for himself across the pond with his iconic Carpool Karaoke and Spill Your Guts challenge.

James and Mat reunited for Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas special in 2019 and Mathew squashed any rumours of a feud.

When asked about the MailOnline ‘spawn’ in the launch episode, Mat insisted the claims were completely fabricated, with no animosity involved.

As MailOnline asked the actor: “Following rumours of a feud, did you feel the need to address the claims when you met earlier this year?” Mathew simply insisted the claims were fabricated, as he joined the entire cast except James at the press conference.

After both insisted there was never a feud between the pair, they will reunite once again for the final episode of the sitcom airing this Christmas.
