& # 39; The children were in bed. They had no working smoke detectors in the house and Natalie stood up, she smelled smoke, & Mrs. Mutsaers told AAP.
& # 39; (Gary) was still in the house and everyone suspected that he was on his way out and that he had never got out.
& # 39; He made Kristina get out and Kristina thought he was behind her, but he must have succumbed to the smoke.
& # 39; He yelled at Kristina to leave the house … she went back for him and he told her to leave. & # 39;
The flames were about 20 meters high and the fire in the fireplace is thought to have started, Mrs. Mutsaers said.
Mr. Van Bree had escaped from the house after he thought his granddaughter had followed him, but went back inside when he realized she wasn't, the Herald sun reported.
Mrs. Mutsaers said that at that time he & # 39; many health problems & # 39; including cancer.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Mr Van Bree's destroyed family, left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

& # 39; It's just devastating, you don't expect it to happen in your own neighborhood, & # 39; said Mrs. Mutsaers.
& # 39; I almost said (Natalie) that we will take care of the funeral expenses. I hope the community comes after us. & # 39;
Kristina was taken to Dandenong Hospital for an investigation, but has since been discharged.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
