Manchester United players have been “killed” by Ruben Amorim’s assessment that they are part of the “worst team” in the club’s history, Gary Neville has claimed.

Amorim made the alarming comment after United suffered a seventh defeat in 15 games under their new head coach against Brighton on Sunday. The 39-year-old also damaged a television in the dressing room during a post-match rant at Old Trafford.

“We are perhaps the worst team in Manchester United’s history,” Amorim admitted after the match.

Shortly after, he apologized in a lengthy comment, part of which read: “I’m a young boy and sometimes I make a mistake,” he said before Thursday’s Europa League match against Rangers.

“That’s why I don’t speak after the game. In this game I needed to speak and maybe it was a mistake and then I get more nervous and I go to the press conference very nervous and I say things that I shouldn’t say, that’s all. I don’t promise you that I won’t do it again, but I will try to improve.’

And former United defender turned pundit Neville, speaking in The Gary Neville PodcastHe has valued the words, defending the current United coach.

Neville came to the defense of the Red Devils coach, praising his passion and honesty.

“I can sympathize with him because emotion and passion is everything I want in a football club and in a coach,” he began. “It hurts him, so he wants to come out and say what he thinks and that’s something I admire.”

‘That’s what we ask, that everyone be honest and authentic. We can’t sit here as broadcasters and criticize him for that. What are you trying to do to understand what the impact is and what it would be like in your own business? If you go to the office and your boss says you’re the worst group of people they’ve ever had in the office, there would be devastation and the boss probably wouldn’t survive.

‘The employees would lose faith, trust and belief, so you can only imagine the impact it had on the players. Hearing it from your own manager is different, it has a deeper meaning. He backed off probably because the people above or the players were saying, “It kills us.”

‘Who is it addressed to? Each player must ask themselves: “Does this mean me?” You will have realized the impact of your words on the people you ask to perform for you each week. But I needed to send a message to everyone that this must change radically.”

United face Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday, looking to improve on their form that has seen them drop to 13th in the league table. They could drop to 15th place if they lose.

Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes also appeared to defend his coach in the build-up to the match, urging his teammates to show that they “have the balls to play for this club.”

“The reality is that to play here you have to have that pressure, you have to have the balls to play for this club, that’s what it is,” Fernandes said. “We have to feel that in every moment of every game there is a new opportunity to return ourselves to the position we deserve.

‘Unfortunately for us this season there have been too many ups and downs and every time it looks like we are going to get there, we get hit again and go down.

“What we have to do is every time we take a hit and go down, we have to get up and try to hit back.”
