Juan Sebastian Veron may not have lived up to expectations at Manchester United, but he has shown enough to make Gary Neville’s first-ever overseas XI for the club.
And Bruno Fernandes, who has only been with the club since January, has already done enough to make his way to Neville’s team.
But there was no room for United’s current boss and Champions League hero from the treble season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Juan Sebastian Veron has made Gary Neville’s all-time Manchester United overseas XI
Veron struggled to live up to the hype when he joined United in 2001 to make a lot of money
United’s former right-back was challenged on Twitter Friday morning to make up his all-time XI, excluding players from the British Isles, and it has generated a lot of discussion.
The recording of Veron, who signed with Lazio in a major action in 2001, raised the most eyebrows. The Argentinian won a Premier League title in 2003 but failed to live up to the record £ 28.1 million price tag and moved to Chelsea after two years.
He scored 11 goals in 82 appearances in two seasons, but fell short of the form that made him one of the biggest names in world football at the time.
His participation drew a lot of response on Twitter, with one user even saying, “I would be tempted to go along with Anderson about Veron.”
Veron’s partner in central midfield is Bruno Fernandes, who only joined the club in January but has clearly shown enough to earn a place in Neville’s XI.
Fernandes has become a talisman figure since moving from Sporting Lisbon, scoring 16 goals in 28 appearances.
Neville posted his XI to Twitter Friday morning, and it drew a lot of comments
Bruno Fernandes has made the cut, despite only signing with the club in January of this year
There was no room for current boss and 1999 Champions League hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
He helped United to the Europa League semifinals and returned them to the Champions League after a bad start to last season.
His leadership on the field even saw him be named captain for United’s midweek trip to Paris Saint-Germain.
But some people were surprised to see how he fared, tweeting: ‘Bruno. I was hoping Gary would know a little more than that!
“ The majority of the games he was average and of course scored a ton of pens – yes, he improved on a bad United team, but he wouldn’t fit into so many other United teams over the years. ”
Ruud van Nistelrooy made the team after 150 goals in 219 games for United
Neville’s former teammates Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo also made the team
Rafael was another startling shot of Neville, with some suggesting former captain Antonio Valencia deserved a place instead.
The Brazilian won three Premier League titles with United and replaced Neville at right back when he retired in 2011.
One person wrote on Twitter: ‘I’ll cover up Veron, but I don’t have Rafael there. Not a chance, not a chance. ‘
The rest of Neville’s XI chooses themselves, with Peter Schmeichel in the goal, Jaap Stam and Nemanja Vidic together form a center-back and Patrice Evra completes the back four.
Schmeichel makes the squad for the current number 1 David de Gea, who has been a fixture for United since 2011.
Neville retired the same summer as De Gea, but has extensively praised the Spaniard over the years. De Gea’s longevity saw him overtake Schmeichel as United’s leading foreign performances maker in Premier League history.
Edwin van der Sar, who won the Champions League in 2008 and reached two finals in 2009 and 2011, also missed.
In an attacking team, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez patrol the flanks, while Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy work together in the attack.
A star-studded front line explains Solskjaer’s absence, even though he was the match winner of United’s best night at Nou Camp in 1999.
The Norwegian spent more than a decade at Old Trafford, scoring 126 goals in 366 appearances, building a reputation as a super submarine.
He has won six Premier League titles as a player, two FA Cups and the Champions League in 1999.
Former South Korean international Park Ji-sung is unfortunate that he missed the game, as one person on Twitter said: “No Park. Thought Park was a great player, and he rarely left United when he played. Was also the ultimate big game player. ‘
Other notable absentees include Mikael Silvestre, Juan Mata and Andrei Kanchelskis.
