Gary Lineker compared Lauren James’s stamp against Nigeria in the Women’s World Cup to David Beckham’s infamous red card against Argentina in 1998.
With the teams tied 0-0, England Women’s star James stomped on the back of Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie in the 86th minute of the round of 16 clash.
Following a VAR review, James was sent off and Lineker compared the incident to Beckham’s red card at the 1998 World Cup.
In Saint-Etienne Beckham was sent off for kicking Argentine Diego Simeone in the round of 16.
That incident led to Beckham receiving a significant amount of criticism and abuse from England supporters.

Lineker described James’ actions against Nigeria as “a moment of madness”
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “The @Lionesses are down to 10 as Lauren James has a Beckhamesque wacky moment.”
BBC commentator Vicki Sparks also made the comparison to the Beckham incident, describing James’ actions as “completely unnecessary”.

James had impressed for England in the group stage of the tournament. She scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Denmark.
After that, James was terrific in a 6-1 win over China as she scored twice, provided three assists and was named player of the match.
Despite James’ sending off, England managed to win 4–2 on penalties to reach the quarter-final after the match ended goalless.
