  • Phil Foden has been heavily unused by Gareth Southgate at the World Cup
  • The Manchester City star was an unused substitute in Friday’s draw against USA
  • Now the 22-year-old has received support to start against Wales on Tuesday
  • Football experts give their verdict on Foden’s chances in Qatar

Football pundits at the World Cup have given their verdict on whether Phil Foden should start for England at the World Cup in Qatar after coming on as an unused substitute in Friday’s 0-0 draw against the US.

Does Phil Foden deserve a spot in England’s starting line-up? Pundits say pressure is mounting on Gareth Southgate as he continues to omit the Man City star… as Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and more assess the Three Lions’ recent line-up.

Foden has played in the Premier League for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City so far this season, with many labeling the 22-year-old as England’s brightest talent.

But the Three Lions boss seems to think otherwise with Foden yet to start for England at the World Cup and many are wondering what the winger will have to do to secure a place in the starting line-up in the Middle East.

The 22-Year-Old Talent Has Been Left Largely Untapped By England Manager Gareth Southgate

Garry Neville

I have a hard time with Phil Foden not starting because I think he is by far our best player in the country. Foden is a generational talent that I think should play.

Gareth Southgate has said Foden is not a player to play in midfield positions – those No. 10 roles from Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount.

Well, that means [against the USA] Foden was England’s fifth-choice wide player. But I must say that, [when it comes to] those two No. 10s and those four wide players, I believe Foden is the star among them.

Jamie Carragher

If you had told me before the tournament that Foden would only play 19 minutes of the first two World Cup games my first thought would have been that he must be injured.

Talk to an England supporter who has watched the Premier League for the past three years and ask, “Who is the most naturally gifted English footballer today?” and 80 percent would say Foden. It felt strange for Southgate to choose Jack Grealish over him against the US.

Danny Murphy

There are questions about Foden not playing, but it’s a result of there being so many great individuals in the squad.

It was all about Grealish at the European Championship last year and James Maddison in the run-up to this World Cup. Now there are complaints that Foden has not been used. I don’t share the outrage. Marcus Rashford scored seconds after coming on the field against Iran. If Southgate had used USA Foden instead of Rashford and the match had ended 0–0, he would have been criticized for omitting Rashford.

Jesse Lingard

I’ve heard people ask why Southgate didn’t make more substitutions against the US, not least why he didn’t bring in Foden. I can only say that there are always reasons that are not obvious from the outside. Squad depth gives you options for different situations and England still has several situations waiting in Qatar.

Michael Owen

I’m amazed that England have used 14 players so far, but our most talented player is still on the bench.

I would change the offensive line-up and stay with the defense. I would start with Grealish on the left and Bukayo Saka or Raheem Sterling on the right. I would select Foden as a No 10 behind Rashford. Playing him in that role against Wales would allow him to get into central areas and impact the game.

Gary Pallister

We should have seen Foden come off the bench more. It seemed like a choice between him and Saka [to face Iran] and Saka was fantastic, but Foden is a fantastic player and I would probably start him.
