Gareth Southgate has received encouraging news about Kyle Walker’s recovery from surgery as Joe Gomez emerges as an option for the England boss’s World Cup squad.

Walker is nearly two weeks into his recovery from groin surgery and is in a race against time to be fit for the tournament which starts in just over four weeks.

The Manchester City star is essential to Southgate’s plans and is one of the team’s guaranteed starters at full fitness.

He must now decide whether to bring Walker, who will not have competition fitness, to Qatar

The England side are closely monitoring the right-back’s recovery from surgery and there are now hopes that Walker can be selected for the final 26-man roster on November 10.

It seems unlikely that Walker will be available for the opening game against Iran on November 21, but he could be selected for a role in the final stages of the tournament.

It’s a tough decision for Southgate, who knows how important Walker is to his plans, but the fact that he’s received positive reports about his progress would have encouraged the England camp.

The news about fellow injured right-back Reece James, however, is less encouraging. The Chelsea right-back is expected to be in a knee brace until the start of the tournament after suffering a ligament injury against AC Milan last week.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Reece James appears to be sidelined until the eve of the tournament

With just one week between the last Premier League game and the start of the tournament, it is clear that Southgate is much less likely to have a player who has not played regular football before the tournament starts.

Under normal circumstances, players should have three to four weeks in camp before the start of the tournament, meaning Southgate and his medical staff can keep a closer eye on their recovery.

Harry Maguire was selected for the European Championship squad last year despite missing the end of the season through injury, but was ultimately able to play in the final group stage match against the Czech Republic before taking on a leading role in the England’s route to the final.

It seems unlikely that Southgate will take two injured players to the World Cup, given the shorter than usual turnaround time.

And if Southgate takes a risk, the fact that Walker will be more advanced in his recovery will likely give him an edge over James.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has emerged as a potential solution to the growing right-back’s concerns

The misadventures of his two leading right-backs in recent days have forced Southgate to rethink the defensive make-up of his roster, with Liverpool’s Gomez back on the radar.

Gomez was outstanding in Sunday’s win over Manchester City and is hoping for an extended run at Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And if the former Charlton defender, who can play at center and right-back, can impress and play enough between now and the squad deadline, he has a chance to beat Southgate’s side.

Arsenal’s Ben White is another who could benefit from Walker and James’ injuries.
