England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that he is not in favor of a proposed new documentary targeting his players’ partners.

In addition, Southgate stated that he finds the term ‘WAGs’ disrespectful.

Southgate was only too happy to emphasize that he wants to avoid any possible distraction in Qatar.

“Well, not really my thing,” Southgate said of the proposed documentary.

“I would be surprised if the group of players we have would be interested in that because they wanted to focus on football.

“In Russia and last summer, the focus was all on the players and everything they do. We’ve never had any problems.’

Southgate has previously been praised for creating a strong sense of unity among the squad during tournaments.

During his time as manager, Southgate has helped foster something akin to a club environment in the England line-up; something that has been sorely lacking in the past when different factions, including players from rival clubs, often struggled to learn.

England want to build on reaching the Euro 2020 final and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

While Southgate is not keen on documentary plans, Southgate stressed the importance of making players feel welcome, including the involvement of their families.

Southgate said: ‘We want to get the families involved. We think it’s important that the partners of the players… I actually find the term “WAGs” quite disrespectful. It’s their partners and family so I don’t like the term.

‘But we want them to feel welcome, we invited them to the hotel whenever we could in Russia – mothers, fathers and children.

‘It’s a great feeling when you especially have the children inside, it changes the dynamics of the hotel. We couldn’t do that last year because of Covid.

“It’s one big family, so I think everyone can see that some of what we’ve been doing over the years has been really good.”

Southgate’s immediate focus is on trying to secure England’s first win of their Nations League campaign when they face Hungary on Tuesday.

England are looking for revenge after their 1-0 defeat to the same opponents earlier this month, followed by draws against Germany and Italy.

Southgate’s side are currently bottom of Group A3 and are in danger of being relegated to League B.
