Gareth Bale takes another shot at Jose Mourinho after scoring a hat-trick against Sheffield United, as he insists: ‘We are closer to the goal and can score more … we play football the way of Tottenham’
- Gareth Bale said he ‘feels good’ and is ‘happy’ with Tottenham’s attacking style
- The Welshman scored a hat-trick in Spurs’s 4-0 win over Sheffield United
- Bale boldly pointed out that being ‘closer to the goal’ means ‘you can score more’
- The comment contrasts with Jose Mourinho’s very defensive tactics
Gareth Bale insisted he feels ‘good’ and ‘happy’ with janitor manager Ryan Mason’s new attacking behavior after scoring a hat-trick in Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Sheffield United.
Bale had arguably his best performance since returning to White Hart Lane on loan in the summer. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg plays the defensive role in midfield.
When asked what made him happy with Mason’s attacking tactics, Bale told Sky Sports, “ (It’s) the fact that we’re more on the front foot, we’re closer to the goal and you can score more.

Bale put three past Sheffield United and said being closer to goal helps scoring
‘We have been working on that for the past few weeks. It’s not going to happen overnight, of course, but I feel like we’re taking a step in the right direction.
“We play the Tottenham way.”
Bale’s comments could be interpreted as a brutal dig at former manager Jose Mourinho, with whom the Welshman had a troubled relationship. The Portuguese was partially fired because of the difficult defensive football he wanted the Spurs to play on.
Mourinho used Bale sparingly, sometimes suggesting his fitness was a problem, but he completed 75 minutes against the Blades on Sunday with apparent ease.

“I feel fine, as I said before, I just had to play games, to play a series of games and I do now,” said Bale.
‘I’m happy and when I’m happy I usually play well.
‘It was a great performance from the first whistle. I feel like we were on the font foot and we pressed well, got the ball, and played good football. It’s always fun to hit another (hat-trick) ball.
“You have to take your chances when they come, and I had a few tonight.
‘Winning always makes everyone happy, it gives the dressing room a winning mentality. That’s all we can do. ‘
