A garbage truck driver faces driving charges under the influence of alcohol after he fatally hit Australian woman Madison Lyden while riding a bicycle on a New York City street.

Police say Ms. Lyden, 23, was diverted to avoid a transportation booth that blocked a bicycle lane near Central Park on Friday.

They say a commercial garbage truck hit Ms. Lyden when she turned off the bike lane. Lyden was pronounced dead in a hospital.

The driver of the truck, Felipe Chairez, 44, was later arrested on charges including driving while intoxicated.

Defense group Transportation Alternatives says Ms. Lyden's death underscores the need for bike lanes protected.

Ms. Lyden moved from Lauderdale in Tasmania to Geelong in Victoria in 2016 to study.
