Xbox got Gamescom a little early, but the show got off to a great start with Opening Night Live hosted – as always – by Geoff Keighley. It was a lengthy event clocking in at twenty-two hours, but there was a lot to see, from surprising crossovers to big names like Halo, Horizon Forbidden West, and Death Stranding.
If you couldn’t attend the event, here are all the biggest announcements and best trailers.
Firaxis is making a Marvel game
One of the biggest surprises was the news that XCOM developer Firaxis dabbles in the Marvel universe with midnight Sun. It’s described as a tactical RPG – surprise, surprise – and will feature a brand new customizable superhero designed just for the game. The studio will show a gameplay trailer on September 1, and the game itself is expected to launch in March.
Halo will get a release date and a special edition console
This one actually leaked out a bit before the show, but it’s big news nonetheless: Halo Infinite will finally launch on December 8. The game was originally expected to launch last year and serve as a major showcase for the Xbox Series X, but those plans were partially delayed due to the pandemic. The new trailer, meanwhile, focuses on the story for the game’s multiplayer component. And while the game will be out this year, there will be a few pieces missing; namely campaign co-op and the creative Forge mode.
Oh, and if you still need an Xbox Series X to play it on, Microsoft makes a special edition console and controller just for Halo.
Horizon Forbidden West will be postponed until 2022
One of PlayStation’s biggest exclusives has been postponed, and Sony confirms it Horizon Forbidden West coming to PS4 and PS5 now on February 22, 2022. In any case, there’s some good news: the original game just got a 60fps patch for PS5.
A lot Star Wars (and lego)
Perhaps the cutest trailer was for The Skywalker Saga, the last Lego Star Wars game, which includes all nine of the major films. It looks cute and elaborate – and will be out next spring.
Person 5 Comes to… Super Monkey Ball
The following Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania will be something similar Fortnite or Super Smash Bros., add all kinds of unexpected characters to the selection. Previously that was included Kiryu out Yakuza, and now Sega has announced that Person 5Morgana will also be a DLC character. Banana Mania comes out on October 5, but Morgana won’t arrive until November 2.
Saints Row gets a reboot
Open world action series Saints Row reboots with a new game coming out next year. It’s just called Saints Row, and based on what we’ve seen, it looks just as wild as its predecessors. The game is expected to release on February 25 on a huge range of platforms (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC).
jett will start in October

Another look at Death Stranding: Director’s Cut
It may not really be a director’s cut, but the improved version of Death Stranding still looks interesting and expands on some ideas Hideo Kojima’s 2019 hit and adds next-generation improvements. The latest trailer takes a closer look at what’s new.
A glimpse of Call of Duty: Vanguard play
Sledgehammer officially unveiled Call of Duty: Vanguard last week, and today, the studio showed off a good chunk of gameplay to give viewers a taste of the more grounded WWII action. You can watch all nine minutes of it above. Forefront is scheduled to launch on November 5.
April joins the cast of Shredder’s Revenge
The lovely retro Shredder’s Revenge seems to channel classic Ninja Turtles beat ’em ups from the arcade era. And at Gamescom, a new character was revealed: April O’Neil joins the four turtles. The game is coming to Switch and PC next year.
Cult of the Lamb looks wild
Look, I’ll let the official description do all the work here:
Cult of the Lamb casts players in the role of a possessed lamb saved from destruction by an ominous stranger, and must repay their debt by building a loyal following in his name. Start your own cult in a land of false prophets, venture into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of forest worshipers, and spread your word to become the one and only cult.
The launch is expected in 2022.
DokeV looking awesome
I’m not quite sure what DokeV actually, but the debut trailer is incredible, with a great sense of style and gameplay that spans genres from skateboarding to monster battles.
martial arts game sifu comes out in February
One of the more intriguing upcoming action games is sifu, which seems to channel a classic martial arts film, only in interactive form. And now it has a release date: February 22, 2022. It comes out on PlayStation and PC, via the Epic Games Store.
