The game between the Dutch first division soccer teams FC Groningen and NEC Nijmegen was stopped after 17 minutes on Saturday evening after a cup was thrown at an assistant referee. Goals had not yet been scored in the Eredivisie duel at this point.
The linesman was hit in the pants during the throw. The rules of the Dutch Football Association KNVB stipulate that the game must be abandoned after such a spectator offense.
According to the newspaper “Telegraaf”, the cup thrower was caught.
