A former California sheriff’s deputy who left law enforcement after being brutally attacked by a suspect gave future law enforcement a chilling warning, saying being a cop is “not worth it.”
Meagan McCarthy resigned from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in 2022 after she was attacked by a suspect who punched her before taking control of his gun and shooting the mother.
The man who attacked her in the 2019 incident, Ari Young, was acquitted of attempted murder and assault charges after a reform to the state’s jury selection process allowed those with an “expressed bias” against the forces law enforcement will participate in the case, according to McCarthy. .
Now the former police officer is warning anyone considering joining the force to reconsider because lawmakers won’t protect them.
“It would be really difficult for me to go and serve the policing institution, simply because politicians, elected officials and our leaders don’t have our backs,” McCarthy said. Fox News.

‘I don’t think this job is worth it. With what happened to me, with a suspect trying to murder me and then the criminal justice system, the California court system and our California legislators, none of them for the last five years, I’ve seen them have your back.
“You have to worry about these leaders coming after you years later,” he said. “We’re seeing all these crazy, woke district attorneys opening cases years later.”
Police agencies across the country have struggled to recruit new officers in recent years.
Following widespread calls for reform that spread across the country following the murder of George Floyd, many departments suffered funding cuts.
Many police officers feel that legislatures have become “soft on crime,” making their jobs more difficult and they are not protected.
“It’s really hard to say why anyone should be a police officer today,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy said police officers have to worry about district attorneys and “woke” elected officials who “don’t have our back.”

When a jury acquitted her attacker, McCarthy said the justice system not only let her down but also set a “harmful” precedent for police officers and victims around the world.
“Not only did I lose my job when the suspect tried to execute me, but I also lost my career and can no longer contribute to our accounts,” he said.

McCarthy and Young were seen fighting before the man could be seen punching her several times in the face and head.
As McCarthy fell to the ground, Young grabbed the woman’s firearm and attempted to begin shooting at the law enforcement officer.
A jury acquitted the man who brutally attacked McCarthy by beating her, then took control of his gun and shot the mother in 2019.

Young proceeded to shoot the officer multiple times as she attempted to flee.
The bullets fired at McCarthy missed and she fortunately escaped the incident without life-threatening injuries. She was taken to the hospital without serious injuries.
On May 31, 2023, a jury acquitted Young, who suffers from schizophrenia, of attempted murder but found him guilty of negligent discharge of a firearm.
“If my sons or daughter came to me and said, ‘Mom, I want to be a police officer,’ I would give them every reason not to be one.”
“I was very proud to be a police officer,” he said. “I love serving the community and I just wish the authorities could swing the pendulum back for them.”
