The country’s love for period properties shows no signs of slowing down, according to Rightmove.

It revealed the five most popular period house styles, based on searches on its website.

At the top of the list are Victorian properties, which refer to properties built during the era of Queen Victoria’s reign, from 1837 to 1901.

These properties usually have two or three floors and have high windows and abundant decorative elements.

Robert McLaughlin, of estate agency KFH, said: ‘From small terraced houses to large villas, Victorian properties have a wealth of character details which remain popular and in-demand with buyers today.

“If we are lucky enough to market a Victorian house, buyer demand is high as its charm never seems to go out of style.”

And Rightmove’s Tim Bannister said: ‘Victorian homes remain particularly popular, characterized by their historic charm, solid construction and spacious interiors.

“You will often find Victorian homes in some of the most desirable locations including convenient access to schools and transport links.”

The second most popular type of period property is Georgian, which is more symmetrical and often features high ceilings and pillars.

This type of property was built between 1714 and 1830, spanning the reigns of George I-IV.

Matt Thompson, of Chestertons estate agency, said: ‘The London property market has a large number of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses and each architectural style has its own fan base.

‘It’s worth noting that, post-pandemic, we saw a slight increase in interest in Georgian properties, as buyers were driven to find a style of home that had a reputation for being more spacious and could Host a home office more easily.

“However, as demand for property in the capital outstrips supply, all architectural styles continue to attract interest and bids from buyers.”

Also in the top five are Edwardian, Tudor and Regency properties. Here are some properties for sale covering each of the five periods…
