Bloomingdale’s celebrates the 50th anniversary of its famous big brown bag, in which cameos have landed Sex and the city, Friends, Josie and the Pussycats and countless other TV shows and movies – featuring designer collaborations and exclusive merchandise.
Originally created by graphic designer Massimo Vignelli, the iconic Kraft paper tote bag with its rounded font, debuted in 1973 and became a status symbol among stylish shoppers. To celebrate the bag’s anniversary, Bloomingdale’s asked Ralph Lauren, Stoney Clover Lane, Mother Denim, Helmut Lang and other brands to create limited edition designs inspired by the bag and New York for its Carousel @ Bloomingdale’s pop-up storewhich runs from September 6 to October 26 at the company’s flagship in Manhattan.
Dubbed the Big Brown Bazaar, the nearly two-month boutique is “a nod to the Bloomingdale brothers’ first store on the Lower East Side” and will feature Polo Ralph Lauren graphic sweaters and hoodies; tote bags, travel accessories and bags from Economy Candy, Bybba and Stoney Clover Lane; pickleball accessories (such as a “Large brown paddle“) per break; echo silk scarves; Kule totes inspired by Caffè Panna from Gramercy Park; housewares from the Plaza Hotel; candy and foodie accessories from fro-yo spot Forty Carrots; Alexa Leigh jewelry; fragrances from By Far and Bond No. 9 New York; roller skates and accessories from Impala Skate; and more.
The pop-up also celebrates the 50th anniversary of T-shirt hip-hop with a curated collection that includes T-shirts from Unfortunate Portrait, robes from Versace, stationery from Kaleidadope, Headphones from Beats from Dr. Dre, artful speakers from Transparent, books from Taschen and more.
