Friends of Meryl Streep and Martin Short suspect they are ‘friends with benefits’ despite denying romance rumors

Meryl Streep and Martin Short’s inner circles believe the friends have a “friends with benefits” charge, despite shutting down dating rumors.

The Only Murders in the Building co-stars, who have repeatedly insisted that they are “very good” friends, are “planning a cozy getaway,” according to RadarOnline.

Their alleged travel plans raised suspicions among loved ones that their relationship may have gone from platonic to romantic.

‘Actions are more powerful than words, and these two’s actions say something is happening!’ a source told National Researcher.

The source added: “Let them label their ‘special’ relationship however they want… the indisputable truth is that they are enjoying spending more and more time alone together.”

Since hooking up on the set of their hit comedy series, Only Murders in the Building, the duo have been forced to deny dating rumors on multiple occasions.

Last month, the father of the bride actor denied that they were in a romantic relationship during an episode of Random Club with Bill Maherafter he and Meryl put on a cozy display during several awards shows, including the AFI Awards.

“We’re not a couple, we’re just very close friends,” Martin said on the popular podcast.

“Well, you should, because there’s nothing more powerful in Hollywood than a power couple,” Bill noted.

A representative for Short has previously denied that anything romantic happened between the couple.

“It worked for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, it worked for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie,” the host joked.

Rumors swirled after the stars posed close during the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 7 and again on Jan. 12 at the AFI Awards.

After the Golden Globes, fans speculated that they were romantically involved, and their rep told People that they are simply “good friends, nothing more.”

Days later, at the AFI Awards luncheon, Meryl playfully put her hand on Martin’s face on the red carpet, as if to jokingly push him away.

Once inside, the friends sat nearby and laughed out loud as they sat next to each other during lunch.

The actors star together in Only Murders in the Building, alongside Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Jackie Hoffman.

Martin plays Oliver Putnam and Meryl plays Loretta Durkin.

Meryl announced her separation from her husband Don Gummer in October 2023, after being quietly separated for years after 45 years of marriage.

The former couple have four children together: daughters Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32, and son Henry, 44.

Meanwhile, Short lost his wife Nancy Dolman to ovarian cancer in 2010.
