Au pair Jacinta Davis escaped terrifying carjacking attempt in Sydney's northern suburbs

An au pair recalled how adrenaline and instincts kicked in when she confronted a suspected car thief while a distraught child watched helplessly from the back seat.

Jacinta Davis was stopped at traffic lights at Frenchs Forest on Sydney’s northern beaches on Monday morning when a shirtless man allegedly began attacking her bonnet and windscreen.

A 10-year-old girl I was babysitting at the time watched in horror from the back seat.

“He jumped on the hood of my car and started screaming to get out of the car and broke the windshield,” Davis told Seven News.

“I just put my arms up to protect my face because there was glass everywhere.”

The man then allegedly tried to open the door of a vehicle.

“If I had left it open, he probably would have gotten me out of the car and walked away with the child in it,” Mrs. Davis said.

‘My instincts kicked in, it was like adrenaline. I have a child in the car and I need to do everything I can to make sure he is safe.

‘Just protect the child. That’s all I cared about.

Then the lights turned green.

“I started walking away and he was still trying to open the car door,” Mrs Davis said.

Finally the man let go of the car.

The girl was left traumatized by the horrific incident.

“She was terrified, she was screaming, she was crying, she just wanted her parents,” Mrs Davis said.

Police later arrested the man in dramatic scenes.

New South Wales Police told Daily Mail Australia that officers were called to Wakehurst Parkway at 8am on Monday after reports that a man had allegedly assaulted a woman during an attempted carjacking.

“The woman managed to flee before contacting police,” a spokesman said.

Upon arrival, the man allegedly jumped into the police vehicle, damaging the hood before being arrested.

“During the arrest, the man allegedly assaulted a police officer, who was taken to hospital with facial injuries.”

The 29-year-old man was taken to North Shore Hospital under police guard.

An investigation into the incident is underway. No charges have yet been filed.
