Francis Ford Coppola has decided to reveal how often he thinks about the Roman Empire.
The filmmaker joined the TikTok trend via Instagram on Friday by asking himself the viral question: “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?”
“A lot,” Coppola wrote in response. “As the Roman Republic served as an example for my country America and its institutions, and was the inspiration for my upcoming film (Megalopolis).”
The trend has been making the rounds on social media in recent weeks, with women asking the men in their lives how often they think about the Roman Empire. Most men respond and claim that they think about it daily or several times a week.
The godfather director added: “My fascination with the Roman Republic is based on the struggle between the political parties, in which the interests of the Republic gave way to the ambitions of a few powerful men who embraced the objectives of political parties to further their own fortunes and to establish authority by relying on military forces to achieve those goals, thereby dealing the final blow to a constitution that is already tottering.”
Megalopolis revolves around an architect who wants to rebuild New York City into a utopia after a devastating disaster. The cast includes Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, Talia Shire, Shia LaBeouf, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman and Dustin Hoffman.
The sci-fi drama has been a passion project for Coppola that has been in the works for decades. In 2021, news broke that he even financed the $120 million film himself.
In March 2022 he said The Hollywood Reporter that he put his own money into the film to get his own way. “There’s a certain way that everyone thinks a movie should be, and that goes against the grain when you have a different idea,” Coppola said at the time. “People can be very unacceptable, but sometimes the different idea represents what will happen in the future. That is worth considering.”
although Megalopolis does not have a specific release date yet, it is expected to be released next year.
