Four people have died and one man was left fighting for his life in hospital after a horror crash south-west of Dubbo on Friday night.

Emergency services responded to the Newell Highway at 9:20 p.m. and discovered that two cars had collided on the interstate highway, about 30 kilometers from the regional city.

Two men, believed to be in their 20s, and an older man and woman died at the scene, New South Wales Police confirmed on Saturday.

A fourth man, who was driving one of the vehicles, was taken to Dubbo Hospital with suspected leg injuries.

“Police established a crime scene and began investigating the accident,” a New South Wales Police spokesperson said.

“A report will be prepared for the corner.”

The Newell Highway is closed in both directions between Dubbo and Tomingley, and motorists are urged to take the Mitchell Hwy from Tomingley Rd.

Live Traffic NSW has advised that the road will be closed for “some time” and has reminded drivers that the detours are not suitable for B-Triple and AB Triple heavy vehicles.
