An undercover police officer from Fort Worth, Texas, who was shot in the head during a gun battle with a group of armed robbers, has died.

Officer Garrett Hull, a 17-year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. Friday at the John Peter Smith Hospital.

Hundreds of his fellow officers were in the hospital when they heard the news after meeting to monitor and show their support.

"We lost a true hero," said Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald. & # 39; Someone who has dedicated more than one service tour to this great city … all our department is suffering at this moment & # 39;

"The death of Officer Hull is the worst scenario for our men and women dressed in blue," said Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price at a press conference.

Hull was the department's first officer to die in the line of duty since 2006, according to Dallas News.

The three men entered with their guns drawn, but Hull and a group of other officers waited outside and confronted them as they tried to flee the establishment and jump into an SUV.

Police said one of the men, Dacion Steptoe, pointed to Hull and was shot in the head.

Another officer returned the fire, killing Steptoe, according to WFAA.

Two other men, Samuel Mayfield and Timothy Huff, have been identified by the authorities as accomplices of Steptoe.

Thefts are mainly from Latin bars, in which three people have been murdered.

Authorities say that the night they shot Hull, the three men returned to the same bar they had stolen in July.

Hull is survived by a wife and two daughters.
