Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich was arrested for allegedly assaulting a prostitute in Frankfurt, police said.

Ullrich, the only German cyclist to have won the Tour de France, has been released on bail pending an investigation for possible attempted involuntary manslaughter.

The 44-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol and drugs & # 39; when arrested, said a police spokesman.

The incident took place a week after Ullrich was arrested by the police in Mallorca, after forcibly entering his neighbor's house and threatening him.

The assault took place in a luxury hotel after Ullrich argued with the 31-year-old prostitute and, according to the victim, physically assaulted her.

Prosecutor Nadja Niesen had said that Ullrich had "drowned so tightly (to the escort) that his vision turned black."

Ullrich was staying in Frankfurt to receive treatment for alcohol and drug abuse, reports the German press.

The former pro-cyclist had sought treatment after being arrested in Mallorca last Friday for "entrance and violent threats" to his neighbor, German actor and film director Til Schweiger, in Palma de Mallorca.

Schweiger, best known to the international public as Sergeant Hugo Stiglitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, told German media that the couple used to be around.

Schweiger told Bild that Ullrich had almost become a member of the family, but when his wife left him he started taking amphetamines: he would only sleep for two hours.

"I would start drinking beer at 6 o'clock in the morning and kept it that way until night." He also told me he had a prescription for cocaine.

Ullrich was questioned by a judge on Saturday, and later released and given a restraining order, a court spokeswoman said.

The former cyclist is known to be the only German to win the Tour de France in 1997, and he also won the Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000.

But then he became embroiled in doping allegations and excluded from the Tour de France in 2006 for his links to the Operation Puerto scandal that focused on Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes, who gave blood transfusions to improve the performance of the best cyclists.

Finally he came out clean in 2013 about his doping past.

In 2014, he injured two people in a car accident in Switzerland and was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was sentenced three years later and sentenced to 21 months in prison by a Swiss court.

Ullrich was able to convert that into a suspended sentence of four years plus a fine of 10,000 euros.

His addiction led him to separate from his wife Sara at the end of 2017, and he said that since then he moved with his three children to the Allgaeu region in southern Germany.

Ullrich has a 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship with Gaby Weiss.

Going to rehabilitation had been a condition for him to see his children again.

In the midst of his latest problems, his former rival turned friend Lance Armstrong offered his support earlier this week.

Ullrich's lawyer, Wolfgang Hoppe, said Armstrong was "ready to take a plane immediately with his doctor and come to Europe" to help the German.

Armstrong said the cycling community must stay together. But the most important thing is that Jan first lets himself be helped, "said Hoppe.
