An Indiana man who ran for Congress this year and promised to “restore confidence” in elections was arrested and charged with stealing ballots during a voting machine test.

Larry Savage Jr., 51, had been participating in a public test of a voting machine on Oct. 3 in Madison County when he was caught on camera putting ballots in his pocket.

He then allegedly approached Katherine Callahan, a former Republican candidate for Madison County auditor, and whispered “fucked account” to her.

He later texted Callahan, asking, ‘Do they say anything about the ballots I took?’

Savage described himself as an “everyman” who would “restore trust and protect civil rights” in “fair and transparent elections” when he ran for Congress as a MAGA candidate.

He finished a distant sixth in the Republican primary for Indiana’s 5th congressional district with less than two percent of the vote.

However, Savage was elected to the precinct committee to attend a public test of the voting machine.

Four voting machines were tested with 136 ballots, but two disappeared. Surveillance video showed Savage taking them, folding them and putting them in his pocket.

State police found the ballots in Savage’s car after executing a search warrant, fox 59 reported.

Savage argued to authorities that he only took the ballots because an official at the event had told him they were fake.

“You’re talking about the ticket the lady told me I could accept,” Savage said, according to charging documents. ‘I have the newspaper you’re talking about. I just rolled it up and put it in my pocket. I wasn’t trying to steal from anyone.

However, the official who appears in the surveillance video told attendees: ‘These are live votes. They are live electoral votes.’

Officers asked Savage why he kept the ballots in his pocket if he thought they could freely take them.

County prosecutors say he responded by stating “that he was not going to incriminate himself.”

Savage later claimed that he had no plans to do anything wrong with the ballots and would have returned them if he had known better than to do so.

An arrest warrant was issued for Savage on Monday. A day later, he surrendered, according to indian star.

He faces one count of destroying or losing a ballot and one count of theft.

The voting machine company said Savage engaged in “sabotage of the public test and its voting equipment.”

The state Republican Party has now condemned the man it said ran as a “MAGA candidate.”

“We unequivocally condemn any form of criminal interference in the election,” spokesman Griffin Reid said in a statement.

“We appreciate law enforcement’s efforts to achieve justice and will continue to monitor this situation as the process unfolds.”
