  • A judge ordered Amero to report to prison on April 1, but would extend the time so that the baby is not born in prison

  • She pleaded guilty in November 2019 to two counts of sexual battery and sexual imposition

A former superintendent in Ohio has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing two of her former students while she was a school principal.

Laura Amero, former chief inspector of the Windham school district, claimed that psychological problems led her to commit acts against the students.

“I’m so sorry, and I’m so sorry for the children,” said the Austintowner, reading her letter of apology to Laurier Pittman of Portage County Common Pleas.

But Pittman had a hard time getting the excuse for mental health from the former educator.

“I can’t understand how this continues to happen to teachers, principals, superintendents,” said Pittman, according to the Record Courier. “You know you get caught.”

Pittman comments focused on the educators who were convicted of sexual relationships with their students.

The 35-year-old is currently pregnant and has to give birth in March. Pittman ordered Amero to report to prison on April 1, but would extend the time so that the baby is not born in prison.

WOIO reports that the attacks took place between February 2017 and June 2017. Amero is said to have attempted attacks in September 2015, May 2016, September 2016 and May 2017.

Amero resigned from her position as superintendent in June 2019 after being arrested in April. She started in the position on February 1 of that year.

She pleaded guilty in November 2019 to two counts of sexual battery and sexual imposition.

Pittman sentenced Amero to two five-year stints to be performed consecutively for the sexual battery charges. She was sentenced to six months before the charges for sexual imposition and that runs concurrently with the other charges.

Amero’s sentence is the maximum punishment that is given to Ohio.

The former educator must pay a $ 500 fine and must also register as a Tier III sex offender.

After her release, Amero will have to check in every 90 days for the rest of her life at the office of the local sheriff.

Amero taught English in Mahoning County and was a curriculum leader for Mahoning County Educational Services before joining the Windham district in 2015.

Her lawyer, Joseph Gorman, claimed that Amero should have been imposed on community control penalties, as she did when she spoke to authorities.

Gorman also claimed that Amero was seeking counseling and receiving mental health treatment.

He said that Amero is planning to appeal her sentence.

Connie Lewandowski, public prosecutor in the case, said Amero was operating “out of fraud” to get to where she was.

“When you think of a school, you think of a safe place for children,” Lewandowski said.
