Former Melbourne mayor Sally Capp takes on a surprise new role just weeks after resigning

Former Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp will begin a two-year appointment as vice-chancellor at the University of Melbourne.

The former mayor of Melbourne has accepted a new role as a fellow at one of Australia’s top universities.

Sally Capp, 56, has already begun her new role as vice-chancellor at the University of Melbourne.

Ms Capp stepped down as mayor on June 28 after six years and said at the time she had “no plans” for the next stage of her career.

Her new two-year fellowship will allow her to work in the Faculty of Business and Economics and in the broader university community.

Ms Capp said she was “delighted” with her new job.

“I look forward to making a positive contribution to the Faculty of Business and Economics and the University over the next two years,” he said.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Duncan Maskell described Ms Capp as an “exceptional leader”.

“Sally was an outstanding leader who always championed the people and the many unique elements that make Melbourne one of the world’s great cities,” said Professor Duncan Maskell.

‘This was never more evident than during the global pandemic, when Sally guided Melbourne through some of its darkest times.

‘Sally has also combined a long and successful business career with involvement in a number of charities and non-profit organisations. Her experience and insight will be a boost to the Faculty of Business and Economics and the University.’

Ms Capp was elected Melbourne’s 104th Lord Mayor in a special election following her predecessor, Robert Doyle, resigned in February 2018.

He took office on May 24 of that year and in his farewell speech said that now was “a good time for me to step aside.”

Ms Capp is replaced by Deputy Mayor Nicholas Reece, who has appointed Melbourne councillor Roshena Campbell to run as his deputy in the October election.

Mr Reece, a former Labour Party adviser, and Ms Campbell, a former Liberal candidate, It will be the first time a Labor/Liberal party has entered the mayoral race since the current electoral system was established in 1996.

Mr. Wood previously ran for mayor but came in third, losing to Ms. Capp, in 2020.

Several other candidates have filed to run in the upcoming mayoral election, including F.Former Deputy Mayor Aaron Wood.

A Green Party team consisting of Roxane Ingleton and Marley McRae McLeod have also announced their intention to stand, as has football legend Anthony Koutoufides.

Koutoufides, 51, who played with Carlton in the 1990s and early 2000s and won Dancing With The Stars in 2006, announced his candidacy on Wednesday.

“Their voices need to be heard and the final quarter has just begun,” he said.

“Vote for a better Melbourne.”
