A former McDonald’s chef has revealed why the fast food chain doesn’t offer onion rings as a side, despite many customers begging for the fried vegetables.
Based in Illinois Mike Haraczwho worked at the franchise until 2019, took to TikTok to explain why McDonald’s wouldn’t sell onion rings as a side because it’s not “effective.”
The chef noted that if McDonald’s started selling fried vegetables, they would have to charge too much.
He explained that the chain’s main objective is to make money and be efficient, adding that since it makes a lot of money selling fries, there is no reason to disrupt the flow with another side.

The chef noted that if McDonald’s started selling fried vegetables, they would have to charge too much.

The chef stressed that the chain is all about making money and being efficient, adding that since it makes a lot of money selling fries, there is no reason to disrupt the flow.
In a clip posted to the video-sharing platform, the former McDonald’s chef explained the real reason behind the chain’s reluctance to sell onion rings.
“McDonald’s is most profitable when it is most efficient and that efficiency depends on its scale.
“If (the chain) could sell the same thing, if McDonald’s could sell one thing and that’s it, that would be great for them,” he said at the start of the video.
Mike then noted that because of this, the chain has “reduced” the number of choices available as sides.
He then explained what would happen if the fast food chain introduced onion rings as a side dish.
“Let’s say McDonald’s decides to introduce onion rings, it would probably be for a limited time offering, just for efficiency reasons, it would be something special,” he said.
“Think about how many fewer people would order fries and order onion rings instead.
“Right now, because of the number of fries it sells, its efficiency and, above all, its exaggerated profitability for (the chain), so the markup on its fries, it’s pretty bad. A lot, they charge too much for their fries compared to other items on the menu.
The former chef pointed out that having onion rings as an option would be “much less profitable” for the chain.
