Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is reportedly close to returning to the Netherlands to join Dutch giants Ajax.
Weghorst, 32, currently plays for Championship side Burnley but has made just 22 appearances for the club since arriving at Turf Moor in January 2022.
And after two brief substitute outings this season, he is set to leave the club for a move to Ajax, with his medical scheduled for later today, according to The Telegram.
The Dutch outlet reports that Ajax and Burnley reached a full agreement on Tuesday night for a fee believed to be significantly below €5m (£4.2m).
Weghorst has been out on loan three times since moving to England two and a half years ago.
Wout Weghorst will leave Burnley to join Ajax, with his medical scheduled for later today.
Weghorst spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan at Manchester United.
Weghorst won the Carabao Cup during his loan at United last year.
One of them was at United, as the giant forward spent the second half of the 2022-23 season at Old Trafford.
Weghorst made 31 appearances under Erik ten Hag and scored just two goals during that period. But he helped the Red Devils win silverware, starting in the 2-0 Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle in February 2023.
Having spent time on loan at Besiktas and Hoffenheim before and after his time at United, Weghorst is now set to join Ajax permanently.
Speaking about the prospect of returning to his homeland, Weghorst recently told Kicker: ‘For me, the whole package has to be right, we’re having our fourth child and we’ve travelled a lot as a family in recent years.
“Ajax is the biggest club in Holland, I don’t need to say more.”
Ajax already lost Feyenoord duo Calvin Stengs and Justin Bijlow this summer but are now on the verge of landing Weghorst, who scored the winner for the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 opener against Poland before Ronald Koeman’s men reached the semi-finals.
Weghorst’s arrival could spell the end for Chuba Akpom at Ajax, just a year after joining the club from Middlesbrough.
The Englishman scored 11 goals in 25 league games last season but may have to look for a new club in the coming days as Weghorst is expected to overtake him in the pecking order.
