Former Nottingham Forest footballer Derrick Otim died at the age of 24 after drowning in a lake in the United States.

The England-born Ghanaian midfielder drowned in Lake Keowee, South Carolina, according to reports in America.

Tribute has been paid to the star player by Nottingham Forest FC and teammates, who describe him as a ‘top boy’ who ‘always put a smile on everyone’s face’.

Nottingham Forest FC has placed a tribute to the player by saying, “Rest in peace, Derrick.

Otim’s former teammate, Matty Cash, tweeted in tribute, ‘RIP del, can’t believe I’m writing this.

“Such a top boy who always put a smile on everyone’s face when he was around him.”

Nottingham Forest Women’s FC player Alana Crawford also paid tribute to the player, writing on social media, ‘Life is so cruel. What a beautiful soul you were. Everyone you knew was so lucky to have known someone as nice as you.

Otim was initially trained at Forest Academy before moving to America for college four years ago.

The midfielder – who was known on the field at Xavier University – is said to have recently graduated.

Lake Keowee was branded as the “ deadliest body of water ” in South Carolina by a 2018 report, which said 32 people lost their lives there within 25 years.
