- Annie Hernandez Became a Delta Flight Attendant Right Out of College
- While he thought he had landed his dream job, his enthusiasm quickly faded.
- His health and lack of a consistent sleep schedule were some of the reasons
A former flight attendant has criticized the role that was once her “dream job” after becoming disillusioned with the reality of the role.
Annie Hernandez was a recent graduate who decided to look for a job as soon as possible to start paying off her student loans.
At age 22, she landed a job as a flight attendant at Delta, which she thought was a dream come true as it allowed her to travel around the world, something she hadn’t been able to do much of growing up.
But, as she revealed in a slideshow on TikTok, the hard work involved quickly exhausted her, and in successive selfies, she went from smiling widely to looking less than enthusiastic to openly crying while working.
Annie Hernandez started out excited about her job as a flight attendant at Delta, but her enthusiasm quickly faded as the reality of the job sank in.
“Watch my smile fade when my dream job turns into a nightmare,” he declared in the first of several slides apparently documenting his brief time at the airline.
“This isn’t as good as I expected, but it’s okay, I know the work is worth it,” she wrote in text superimposed on a selfie taken from the jump seat.
In the first of two crying selfies, she wrote: “The company took advantage of me and incited fear into me so I wouldn’t say anything.”
In a second crying selfie, she lamented: “Tears again.
“I learned that I am just a number for this company, they don’t care at all about me or my well-being.”
The slideshow concluded: ‘Me on my flight home after my last day. Crushed dreams.’
Annie continued to lay out her reasons for leaving what was once her dream job in two more TikTok videos.
His first reason was his health, arguing: ‘When I worked for the airline, my health was affected in so many ways that it should not have happened to me.’
Among the things Annie had to struggle with in the position was maintaining her health amid a brutal schedule, as well as not seeing friends or family for long periods of time.
She then explained that she couldn’t exercise because of the “demanding schedule” and physical labor that the job entailed, and that when her schedule ended she felt too exhausted to go to the gym.
With that, she felt that the food options were unhealthy, which made her “feel so disgusting” and she couldn’t commit to preparing the food.
She then described how the job also exacerbated her anxiety, as she never knew what to expect from day to day.
Another major complaint was being “constantly” away from her friends and family, while also being “completely alone in these big cities,” all of which took a toll on her mental health.
‘Also, sleep? I never had enough, because I worked very early in the morning and very late at night. Red eyes,” he explained.
More generally, I had serious complaints with the “scheduling aspect” of the flight attendant’s life.
“People don’t know this, but flight attendants don’t get paid when your flight is delayed,” he said, mentioning one case where he was delayed six hours for which he received no additional compensation.
Additionally, he emphasized that flight attendants “generally have no say in (their) schedule,” nor do they have “a say in where they go.”
‘You basically own the company for the first few years. They say where you are going. They say what time you go. You don’t really have a say in your agenda,’ he continued.
Another of Annie’s main complaints was the lack of work-life balance.
“As far as work-life balance goes, I didn’t feel like I had it at all,” she said.
With that, Annie said that the first year’s salary was “horrible” and that she wasn’t getting enough money for what she was “trying.”
