Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel has weighed in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s tumultuous departure from Manchester United.
After a highly publicized dispute with Erik ten Hag since the Dutchman’s arrival at Old Trafford, Ronaldo’s relationship with the club deteriorated significantly after he made some explosive comments in a TalkTV interview earlier this month.
The two warring sides eventually agreed to mutually terminate Ronaldo’s contract, and the 37-year-old is expected to continue his club career after his return from the World Cup.
John Obi Mikel has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo’s actions leading up to his departure from Manchester United were ‘horrific’
However, Mikel explained that he believes Ronaldo’s off-field antics could deter clubs from being interested in signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“I’ve never really been a Ronaldo fan,” said the former Nigeria captain dubai eye.
“For me, when a player has that much ego, I don’t really get it. He’s never been one of my favorite players and that’s why I always go for Messi.’
“I mean, if someone comes out and gives an interview like that, why do you think if he signs for your club in January, he won’t do the same?”
Ronaldo publicly expressed his frustrations after being relegated to a lesser role within the squad under Erik ten Hag
The Portugal captain then made a number of controversial comments in a TV interview that led to his contract being terminated
Despite his disappointment with Ronaldo’s actions, the 35-year-old admitted that the Portugal captain will always be willing to sign him because of his immense talent.
‘Listen, he’s Cristiano Ronaldo; he is one of the best players to ever play the game. I think he will look for another club in January and continue his football career.
“But for me it’s just a horrible scenario, he’s done so much for the club, and to see it end like this is just awful. For his part, I would say the interview should not have taken place, wrong timing too.
Mikel stated that Ronaldo’s actions could make it more difficult for him to find a new club after the World Cup
‘It’s just not right. It doesn’t look good for such a player who has achieved so much in the game.’
It is known that Mikel almost played alongside Ronaldo during his own lengthy transfer saga.
In 2005, the Nigerian was photographed wearing a Manchester United shirt in a proposed move from Norwegian club Lyn.
However, the transfer would fall through, after Mikel opted to move to Stamford Bridge where he would go on to make 372 appearances in all competitions.
