From sightings of American submarines to mysterious humanoids in the depths of Russian lakes, there is an even more mysterious cousin of the UFO: the USO or Unidentified Submerged Object.
There are multiple reports on USO from around the world, often from respected military professionals and academics, with some claiming that underwater “fast engines” are a common part of life aboard submarines.
Speaking to DailyMail.com, Nigel Watson, author of Captured by Aliens? A History and Analysis of American Abduction Claims, said: ‘We live on an oceanic planet, so it is not surprising that UFOs are seen over or in the vicinity of the large bodies of water that surround us.
‘Concentrations of USO sightings indicate bases in the North Sea and off the coasts of California and Puerto Rico.
‘USOs are just as intriguing as UAPs, but they are even harder to substantiate and are often mixed up with dreams about Atlantis and aliens living in the hollow Earth.
“Personally, for me they are a myth, like mermaids or the Loch Ness monster.”
Pilot sees ‘dark mass’ in water
Retired Navy Commander David Fravor
Retired US Navy Commander David Fravor, famous for spotting the ‘Tic-Tac’ UFO in 2004, described how a fellow pilot had revealed to him a UFO encounter.
The pilot said he had seen a “dark mass”, which he described as “large” and “somewhat circular”, and that it was not a submarine.
Fravor told Joe Rogan’s podcast that the helicopter had dropped a swimmer in the water to collect ammunition.
He said: ‘The first time they went out and went to pick up ammunition, he was sitting in the front (in the CH-53 you can see down through your feet) and as he looks down, there’s 50 feet. “Over the water, he sees this kind of dark mass emerging from the depths.”
‘He’s looking at this thing and goes, “What the hell is that?” And then he goes underwater again. Once the child and the ammunition are removed from the water, this object descends back into the depths.’
The pilot who was recovering spent practice munitions from the sea in a US Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter said that a practice torpedo he was sent to recover was “sucked” into the sea by another object.
The torpedo never surfaced again.
The encounter occurred at sea near Naval Station Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico, Fravor said.
Guantanamo Bay UFOs
Did the Marines see USO in the late sixties?
In the late 1960s, “heavy UFO traffic” was observed at the Guantanamo Bay base.
One former Marine said: “All of us Marines were amazed by the amount of UFO activity on and around this base,” the witness said.
“Virtually every night, UFOs flew overhead at altitudes of less than 300 feet.”
“Most of these UFOs were approximately 50 to 100 feet wide, but to the naked eye they looked like a dull, foggy hull with a small red light behind it.”
The sailor, who wanted to remain anonymous in an interview with paranormal sightings website MUFON, said he was unsure of the exact dates.
The Marine claims he was ordered not to talk about the sightings and said he saw a UFO that looked like a “big beautiful cloud with a pulsing blue and white light.”
Submarine vessel sounds USS Hampton submarine
The USS Hampton Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine
A ship moving through water faster than the speed of sound was “passed by” the USS Hampton submarine, a professor has claimed.
Professor Bob McGwier of Virginia Tech and the Institute for Defense Analysis said sonar aboard the ship detected a USO moving through the water faster than the speed of sound.
McGwier was on the submarine doing classified work and says the crew chose not to investigate to focus on their mission, but he didn’t tell him he couldn’t talk about the strange encounter.
In an interview with YouTube channel UAP Encounters, he said: “We were on the way and suddenly I heard a sound. It’s really strange and clear that something is whizzing past us.
‘When I left there with the knowledge in my head, without having been told to shut up, without being told that I was classified… It’s my turn to tell whoever I want. They ruined it.’
The encounter with the fast attack submarine lasted only a few seconds, McGwier says.
The underwater ‘alien base’ off Malibu
Alien hunters detected what many described as an “alien base” 2,000 feet beneath the waves off Malibu in 2014.
When Google Earth revealed what appeared to be a “structure” beneath the waves, conspiracy fans went wild.
UFO author Preston Dennett said, “I’ve collected probably 50 or 100 reports from people who have seen UFOs going in and out of the water there.”
‘My problem is that Google images come out different, depending on the point of view you look at this from. Some show a tunnel. Some don’t.
“I’m very intrigued by the possibility. I’m convinced there’s something down there.”
However, geologists have dismissed the idea that the structure is a strange foundation, describing it as “perfectly ordinary.”
Lake Baikal USOs
Lake Baikal has witnessed multiple strange sightings over the years.
Lake Baikal in Siberia has been the scene of multiple UFO and UFO sightings, beginning in the Soviet era.
Former Russian Navy officer turned UFO researcher Vladimir Azhazha said: “Fifty percent of UFO encounters are related to oceans. Fifteen more are related to lakes. Therefore, UFOs tend to adhere to the water”.
Azhazha has claimed that military divers saw humanoid beings in strange glowing suits in the water in 1982.
In more recent years, photographers have captured strange lights and mysterious ships over the lake.
President of the Union of Photographers of Buryatia, Sergey Konechnykh, said in 2009: When I saw him, he was flying low. Until it disappeared over the horizon, I continued to look at it. I call it fireball, but I can’t know what it really was.
