Beyond Best Before has shelves packed with popular brands at up to 80 percent off

A little-known independent supermarket is helping Australians overcome the cost of living crisis by selling food at deeply discounted prices.

Beyond Best Before has shelves full of popular brands at up to 80 percent off.

The trick? The products are past their best-before date but are still safe to consume, although they may have lost some quality.

Shoppers can purchase cans of Fanta for $1.70, Honey Nut Cheerios Cereal for $3.90, Black Truffle Sea Salt for $5.50, Barilla Spaghetti for $2.20, Arnott’s Pizza Shapes for $1, Colgate Toothpaste for $4, 20, Edgell chickpeas for 80c, Castello Greek Feta for $3 and more.

The brand just opened its doors in Sydney’s inner western suburb of Newtown in July 2023 and has since opened a second location in Miranda.

The products are listed for a fraction of the cost compared to the exact same brands sold at Coles and Woolworths.

For example, boxes of Arnott’s Shapes at Coles and Woolworths sell for $4 or $6 for two. Black Truffle Sea Salt sells for $21.95 and Omo Laundry Detergent is $7.99 elsewhere.

Maggie, Katie and Michael, the brains behind the business, launched Beyond Best Before with the aim of tackling food waste.

The store only sells canned and packaged products, since fresh foods must be consumed during the week.

Foods labeled with an expiration date, such as meat, must be consumed by a certain time for health and safety reasons.

Customers can also get Hershey’s Chocolate Bars for $1.10, Prime Drinks for $2.35, Veneto Salami Rolls for $7.30, Kitchen Drano for $8, Twinings Tea for $6.40, Suckerpunch Sweet Onion Pickles for $3.60 and up.

A TikToker visited the Newtown store and was surprised by the wide variety on offer.

“If you’re in Sydney, I highly recommend it as a cheap place to get some food,” he said in a video.

While the small local store doesn’t offer everything customers may need, it is a great option for those struggling financially.

It also helps combat Australia’s ongoing food waste problem.

Australian households are unknowingly wasting up to $3,000 each year throwing away leftover food – more than the equivalent of return flights from Sydney to Europe.

Food Innovation Australia’s research comes as a surprise as the cost of living continues to put financial pressure on households.
