A fundraiser created following the tragic death of Samara Whitney has topped $27,000 as the football world comes together to support the 16-year-old’s family.
Footy is in mourning after the death of Wynyard Football Club and Tasmania Devils program member Whitney on Tuesday.
“It is with great sadness and sorrow that we note the sudden passing of Samara Whitney,” Wynyard FC said on social media.
“Samara has been part of the WFC family since juniors and has been a vital part of our Senior Women’s Premiership team this year.
“A dynamic and lovely young woman who made her mark at the WFC as a passionate and talented player, who had a great future ahead of her.

“Our young weapon, our pocket rocket, our number 2… such a positive influence for all. Someone who had a great relationship with our club and the wider community. It will last forever.
“A real star who shone both inside and out.
“We thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey and to bring so much light (and) joy into so many lives.”
A The GoFundMe page has been created in an effort to “give Samara the sweet goodbye she deserves,” with donations totaling over $27,000 in an amazing effort from the football community.
The fundraiser description reads: “Tuesday, September 5, 2023 is a day we will all never forget.
“It was the day we received the tragic news that Samara Whitney #2 was no longer with us.
“Since then, time has stood still for her family, friends, school community and sports clubs as we all begin to grieve and live without our special daughter.
“With permission from Samara’s parents, Kym and Seton, we’ve created this page to help them give their daughter the goodbye she deserves.
“The Whitney & Smitheram families are much loved in our small community and if you would like to donate, please click on the donate button and feel free to leave a message for Samara or her family.

Whitney tragically died this week at the age of 16, sending the world of football into mourning
AFL Tasmania paid tribute to Whitney on Wednesday evening with the following statement: “AFL Tasmania expresses its deepest sympathy to Wynyard Football Club, the North West Football League and the communities of the Tasmania Devils on the sudden passing of Samara. Whitney.
“Samara was a beloved member of the Wynyard Cats and Tasmania Devils programs, having also represented the NWFL in this year’s Women’s All Stars Series.
“Our thoughts are with friends, family and members of the football community at Tassie.”
The Wynyard Football Club opens its doors on September 8 to the public to pay tribute to Samara.
His school will also provide counseling and support services to help students, staff and their families cope with his tragic loss.
