Matt Nable suffered a family tragedy on NRL bonanza day in Las Vegas when his younger brother Aaron passed away.

Aaron, 46, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in July 2022, heartbreaking news for the man whose voice is synonymous with rugby league in Australia.

“What this disease does is the hardest thing to watch,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald last year.

Aaron leaves three children, aged 10, two and one, and was a former national amateur boxing champion, training with legendary trainer Johnny Lewis. He also trained regularly with Australian boxing legend Kostya Tszyu.

The life expectancy of people with MND usually ranges from six months to three years.

Matt Johns, Nable’s Fox League colleague, confirmed the news on air during coverage of the Las Vegas show, although the family has yet to issue a statement.

“One in 200 people gets MND,” Nable said in the same SMH interview.

‘In 1985, it was one in 500, so there is something environmental that is causing that increase. And it is important that they find a cure, because what it does to human beings is catastrophic.

“It’s the definition of sadness.”

Nable has raised more than $100,000 for MND research since her brother’s heartbreaking diagnosis.

Nable has been candid about his own mental battles.

The Nable family is yet to release a statement, but Matty Johns confirmed the news on Sunday's NRL show on Fox League.

In the past, Matt admitted to using “very bad alcohol” at different times in his life, exacerbating hypermania and his bipolar disorder.

‘At my age, with my children and my wife, I don’t need to do any of that (indulge myself). That doesn’t mean I won’t do it; It means I have to be vigilant about it,” he said in 2018.

He went on to call it a “double-edged sword” as it at times amplified his creativity and inspired him to write his novel, The Last Winter, which later became his first feature film, in which he also starred.
