Footy star Benji Marshall says ’10 men once claimed to be his father’

NRL star Benji Marshall said “10 men once claimed to be his father,” as he candidly talked about the struggles of not knowing his father in a new interview.

The 37-year-old spoke to Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa about his paternity issue on Wednesday, saying he once received “10 emails from men claiming to be his real father” after publicly revealing that he had never met his father many years ago.

“After my debut, I did a documentary in New Zealand and said I had never met my father and I had ten emails from people saying they were my father,” Benji told the couple.

The retired footballer said that while he was not interested in dating his father, he was interested in learning more about his identity and culture.

“Won’t you just confront Benji and look him in the eye?” Fitzy asked the football player sharply.

‘No, but I did want to know this from, what am I? Am I English? I don’t know. Like, what half nationality wise?’ added Benji.

He went on to say that his mother Lydia did not understand his desire to learn more about his fatherhood.

‘I talked to my mother about it. I guess she didn’t understand… Or she didn’t know I felt that way,” he said of the conversations.

Then he remembered a story he didn’t know about his father as a child and asked about him, only to see how upset his mother got, so he never asked again.

“But when I was a kid, I asked the question and the look I saw,” he said.

“I never wanted to ask again. You know, so. And to be honest, I still don’t want to put her in a position to ask her,” he continued.

“She had me when she was 15, at a very young age. So the whole circumstance of that, people might not understand.

“I don’t want to dig there with her. That’s her story. This is more about me and what I do. Not me, we didn’t really want to get her involved.’

Benji said Warner Bros. plans to produce his story as a limited series, details of which have yet to be announced.

Benji won hearts by talking about the difficulty of not knowing his father during The Celebrity Apprentice.

The footballer said he is not the ‘flash rugby league rock star’, but the man who is searching for his identity.

“This is a story I’ve never told. I’ve never talked about this in public,” he said.

‘I’ve never talked about it because it means so much to me’ he added.

‘I’m not that. Do you know how I know? Because I don’t even know the real me. There’s a half of me that I haven’t discovered. I don’t know my real father. I don’t know my culture. I don’t know my nationality. Who am I?’

Marshall took his 346-game NRL career off the grid last year after coming off the bench for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in their loss to the Penrith Panthers in the NRL Grand Final.

The five-eighth made his NRL debut as a schoolboy prodigy in 2003 and won a premiership with the West Tigers two years later, where his famous flick pass set up a try in the 2005 grand final and became part of the NRL- folklore.
